So Just What are the causes of washing machine stains?

Overview of Washing Machine Stains

Apart from the technically-minded among us, most people are not that interested in how a washing machine is put together, they just want to know that it works.  However, set out below is a quick review of the types of materials used in the construction of your washing machine, which should satisfy you that any stains on your washing could not be caused by the machine itself.

Hopefully this quick explanation should help you understand there is no need to call on the services of a qualified engineer for a staining issue, as they will not be able to assist you in this instance.

Obviously some clothes are stained before you load them into the machine in the first place, but that is quite a different matter.  More on this post here…

Are your whites turning grey in the washing machine?

One thing that should reassure is that this is generally not a problem with your washing machine. In modern machines, the electronic detector would have picked up a fault, and the washing cycle would be stopped. By the mere fact that you have been able to empty the machine shows that the programme had completed. There are always exceptions to this rule, but hopefully the following reasons and solutions should help you to return to a good result for all your laundry.  Read more…

Are Your Glasses left with dirty marks after being washed in Dishwasher

hen you have washed your glasses in a dishwasher you do not expect them to look marked or dirty, with residues in the bottoms.  This is not the fault of your dishwasher but can be caused by any one of the following:

  • Glasses not loaded properly or being allowed to lay on their side.  This means not only that the water jets cannot reach them properly, but that food deposits can be washed from other dishes and be trapped in the bottom of the glasses.
  • The spray arms are blocked or obstructed.  When loading the dishwasher you must check that the spray arms can fully rotate and are not obstructed by a larger object.  If this is the case you will need to do a bit of repacking to ensure the spray arm is free.  If the arm is not allowed to fully rotate some of your dishes will not even get wet enough for them to be cleaned at all let alone properly.  Also you should check regularly that the spray arms are not blocked by debris, rice is a real culprit here.  Just remove the arms as described in your manufacturer’s handbook, rinse under a hot tap to ensure that the openings are not blocked.  Once you have cleared any blockage, simply replace.  This will ensure that the washing cycle will operate correctly.  Read more here…

Is your Dishwasher leaving glassware spotted and filmy

Sometimes your glassware will be left with white spots or an overall white colour film after a dishwasher cycle.  You will, however, be pleased to know that this filming or spotting can be removed by wiping your glassware with an acidic solution of something like vinegar.  You will obviously need to handwash the glassware carefully afterwards  to get rid of the lingering smell of vinegar

The cause of this filming and spotting will include:

  • Dishwasher salt.  Even though you may use one of the 3 or 4 in 1 detergent products on the market, your dishwasher will still need the addition of salt to keep it working properly and to ensure your dishes are rinsed correctly.  Your particular appliance will probably have a light signal to let you know when you need to add salt.  Please be careful though that you do not overdose your dishwasher, as it can have the opposite effect and may actually be the cause of the filming.  Once you have realised that you have put too much salt in your appliance, you should run the rinse programme a few times until it settles to the right level.  Read more Here…
