Is your Dishwasher leaving glassware spotted and filmy

Sometimes your glassware will be left with white spots or an overall white colour film after a dishwasher cycle.  You will, however, be pleased to know that this filming or spotting can be removed by wiping your glassware with an acidic solution of something like vinegar.  You will obviously need to handwash the glassware carefully afterwards  to get rid of the lingering smell of vinegar

The cause of this filming and spotting will include:

  • Dishwasher salt.  Even though you may use one of the 3 or 4 in 1 detergent products on the market, your dishwasher will still need the addition of salt to keep it working properly and to ensure your dishes are rinsed correctly.  Your particular appliance will probably have a light signal to let you know when you need to add salt.  Please be careful though that you do not overdose your dishwasher, as it can have the opposite effect and may actually be the cause of the filming.  Once you have realised that you have put too much salt in your appliance, you should run the rinse programme a few times until it settles to the right level.  Read more Here…

Why are the plastic items in my dishwasher turning pink and orange

If you see this problem in your dishwasher, it is not caused by a fault and is, therefore, not necessary to call an engineer as he won’t be able to bring the plastic back to its normal colour.

Why has this happened:

  • This orange or pink colour on plastic is caused by a tomato based foodstuff, such as ketchup.  This type of foodstuff contains pigments which are called carotenoid
  • Fatty or oily foods will increase the risk of this type of discolouration

There is no need to be concerned, there are no harmful effects from this discoloured appearance.

These red pigments are contained in such foodstuffs as tomatoes, baked beans, tinned spaghetti, plus other items of food colouring used in curries, including some items such as turmeric.  Read more here…

Discolouration or mildew inside your Dishwasher

Discolouration

You will probably notice this on the plastic components in your dishwasher, the spray arms or cutlery basket.  If you try to rub this discolouration you will probably notice that it will smear.

This effect has been caused by washing articles made or silver, particularly cutlery.  Minute amounts of silver can dissolve and this oxides and forms the sooty deposits on the plastic parts of your dishwasher.  Read more about this here…

Over-foaming Dishwasher help and advice

If you see foam residue in your dishwasher or, in severe cases, foam oozes out of the door seal, you should turn off the appliance as soon as possible.

The cause of over-foaming is not a fault with the appliance itself, it is generally caused by human error by using a non-dishwasher detergent.  If you use gel caps for both your dishwasher and washing machine, there is a chance that you could pick up the wrong gel cap in error. Read More…
